Ultrasound is primarily a screening test but can be diagnostic for some abnormalities such as spina bifida. Although conditions such as Downs syndrome can sometimes be suspected on ultrasound, it is not diagnostic. With the improvement in technology, the diagnostic capability of ultrasound is getting better.
